SUMMARY OF ETHIOPIAN GEOLOGY

The basement rocks of Ethiopia consist of Precambrian igneous and metamorphics containing several orogenic episodes. It is in these rocks or from these rocks that the majority of economic mineral deposits exits. These include gold deposits of the northern, western and southern provinces, Coper, zinc and lead sulphides in greenschist facies metamorphics, talc and nickel and platinum in the Welega Province. The basement rocks are relatively impermeable and thus water resources are in general only associated with fracturing and faulting resulting from rift development of the Red Sea and East African-Ethiopian Rift Valley. For much of the early Palaeozoic, Ethiopia was in a state of steady uplift which caused widespread erosion in all but the northern provinces where deposits partly of glacial origin have been noted. Subsidence followed in the Mesozoic with a large shallow sea spreading initially over the Ogaden province eventually extending further north and west as the land continued to subside. This sequence was followed by general uplift and drying out of lake beds to leave gypsum and anhydrite precipitates. Similar cycles continued through the Tertiary. Regional tectonic activity associated with rifting events in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and East African Rift Valley during the late Tertiary caused faulting and fracturing together with widespread volcanism. Vast quantities of basaltic lava was extruded over the western half of Ethiopia. This was accompanied by ash and coarser tephra forming a sequence know as the Trap Series. Several shield volcanoes consisting of alkali basalts and tephra developed at this time around the eastern edge of the Lake Tana depression.

Quaternary deposits are mainly confined to those associated with large depressions and lakes. Seismic and volcanic activity continues today along the Ethiopian Rift valley system -THE new evidednce is THE lava lake(see THE posted photo)

Poverty (measured by the headcount ratio) declined from 1994 to 1997 , a period that saw a reversal of the secular decline in income per capita. But growth was accompanied by worsening income inequality, as demonstrated by an increased Gini-coefficient and the results from analysis of poverty-dynamics . If inequality had not increased, there would have been a greater de- cline in poverty. It is difficult to know whether the increase in inequality reflects a long-run trend or resulted from idiosyncratic shocks, but either way it is a con- cern for policy design.
One surprising empirical result is that the amount of land cultivated by rural households did not have a significant effect on poverty. This result might be bi- ased because they didn't control for the quality of land. But oxen-ownership sig- nificantly affected poverty. The two results might imply that land was not the most binding constraint for farmers; complementary inputs like ox draught-pow- er may be crucial. Unlike elsewhere in Africa, all land is still owned by the state, so the use-rights are somewhat insecure, which is probably not conducive to pro- ductivity-enhancing investments in agriculture. Nor can land be used as collater- al, which may reduce the efficiency of the credit market. The focus of public policy will have to be more on providing complementary inputs, such as credit facilities and improving security of tenure.
Reforms in trade and the exchange-rate regime, coupled with market-liberal- isation, have helped farmers producing marketable crops, but they still have ma- jor infrastructural constraints to grapple with. Access to markets creates opportunities for the poor to improve their standard of living; rural households who resided near a market were less likely to be poor. Farmers producing market- able crops in general, and exportables in particular (especially chat), had a better chance of escaping poverty. Chat has become an important export, and domestic demand has increased as well. The effect of coffee production was less clear. Rural households in remote areas may also be constrained in consumption goods, not because they cannot afford them, but because the goods are not available.
Compared to elsewhere in Africa, the availability of rural off-farm employ- ment remains limited. In remote areas, there are few non-agricultural opportuni- ties apart from traditional crafts. Poor rather than rich rural households were more involved in off-farm employment, so the provision of employment in the form of food-for-work or similar programmes with appropriate remuneration rates may be successful in targeting them, perhaps playing a role similar to informशन..............

Gibe I ;Gibe/Omo II/III

Gilgel-Gibe is a tributary of Gibe river where the confluence is situated about 80 km downstream from the project site. The river enables the power plant to generate on average 722 million kWh of electric energy annually, which make considerable contribution to increasing the existing system.
..Gilgel-Gibe I Hydroelectric Power plant built at a cost of over two billion birr was inaugurated onFeb-2004by Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, government officials and invited members of international community।
The power plant, the largest in the country, has an installed capacity of 184 MW and was financed by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation, the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and Austria
Some 307 expatriates from 32 various countries and 4,015 local personnelwas participated in the design, supervision and construction works.
The development of the plant involved large underground works that included more than 12 km of tunnel, underground powehouse and a large asphalt faced rock fill dam।
..Gilgel-Gibe II Hydroelectric Project
Gilgel Gibe II is a continuation of Gilgel Gibe I project .Gibe II project, does not need a dam to be constructed. Instead, it will use the water discharged by the Gilgel Gibe I plant, channeled through a 26km tunnel under Fofa mountain, to Omo River Valley where it will harness 500 meter drop to generate 420 Mega Watts.
Once Gilgel-Gibe II hydropower plant becomes operational (by 2008):
it will increase the generating capacity of Ethiopia by 30-40%
since economic development needs energy, Gilgel Gibe will play a vital role in feeding the country's development needs.
it will make an invaluable difference in the lives of many Ethiopian people by giving a large number of households electricity. In places where there was no power before, vital institutions such as hospitals and schools will be fed by this power plant.
It will give a boost to Ethiopia's endeavors in exploiting its hydropower potential.
The Gilgel Gibe construction site was officially launched by Ethiopian government officials and representatives from the Italian Development Cooperation on March 19th, 2005. The main contractor for the construction of the power plant is the Italian company Salini Costruttori.
..The Gibe III hydropower plant is being built in Omo-Gibe River Basin, some 240 km (149 miles) southwest of the capital Addis Ababa. Gilgel Gibe III, the 14 billion birr baby of Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) is expected to boost power distribution in Ethiopia to 1,875 MW.
Construction by Salini was started at the end of December, with aims of keeping the completion date of 2013 a realistic target. The construction of dam, tunnel, distribution and water diversion works are underway.
The project is being financed jointly by the Ethiopian government, the European Investment Bank, the African Development Bank and through contractor’s equity.

CALIFORNIA KILLED A MAN IN ETHIOPIA

It is astrange relegious cermon to see people gathering near a tunnel portal in Gibe II -Ethiopia and celebrating the death of ahard working man who lost his life in the tunnel.The death of the Italian man hurted every body, it was very severe for his wife and parents.It was accidental, while pulling the California ,atransition plat form ,which is used for the two lanes of a locomotive to cross one another .Once in 2 or 3 days the California must be pulled ,as the excavation face is getting far b/c the chainage is increasing,so the california must be pulled towards the TBM ; for the excavated material could be easily loaded to the locomotives ,then to spoil it out from the Tunnel.That month the TBM was not working ,since difficult ground collapsed at the cutters of the cutter head,then the TBM had to be cleaned,maintaned and the ground to be stablised with chemical foams .During this activity there was a solution of chemical streaming b/n the lanes of the two ways/rills .This chemical is cementaceous ,it is the result of the reaction b/n water, chemical foam,tuffaceous volcanic material excavated from the ground, and cement .As days goes on the cement paste made a strong bond b/n the different steel plates that assembled the california and the rills of the loco.
After the difficult ground is treated well,running to excavation is the first step to the sub contractors,the reason is that- it is a multi million Euro project :especally for the TBM one can not immagine the amount of money wasted for every minute of stand up time.
As every day of his routine duty, this man begin to arrange every group of work manship in the tunnel ,he found every thing is ready .Then the California must be pulled in wards .Normally ,it is pulled with two locomotives -one infront of the other .But the two engine pulling forces of the locos, was cracking alloud -like a scary movie sound tracks,pulling ,pulling ,pulling .The cement paste was so strong to release the california from thr rills of the loco.,this man was driving the rear loco ,the chain was getting highly tensioned ,at last it was a must that the chain was broken and the upper half travelled fore ward with the same energy that the california was to be pulled.This chain broke the fore mirror of the loco at which this man is driving ,and becomes the cause for the death of the man.
By tomorrow it was told that California kiled aman in Ethiopia.Then Bush said like this from White House;.....please click here to read the speaches of Bush.

GEOTECHNICAL TIPS

The first Rock Shear apparatus to Ethiopia
Senior geotechnical laboratory technicians and geologists of Ethiopia may not be familiar with -rock shear apparatus ,which is used to evaluate the peak shear strength and the residual shear strength of ajointed rock specimen, which is used to determine the frictional angle and the apparent cohesion.
This frictional angle helps to limit the designing loads and servisablity ,so that to have the safe bearing capacity of the materials that carry the structure
The apparatus directly gives :the varying shear stress, the constant normal load,and both horizontal and vertical displacement of this jointed rock specimen .
From this data a graph is tabulated ,shear strength Vs horizontal displacement--the graph gives the stiffness shear strength ,the peak shear strength and the residual shear strength.Then we can evaluate 3 kinds of coefficient of friction at those 3 different shear strength stages.
